Sell your old Samsung phone.

Galaxy phones run from the A, M and F series to the S flagships and the Z Fold and Z Flip foldables, so what a buyer checks depends on the model. On AMOLED models the screen gets the closest look, for burn-in and lines, and on foldables the hinge and inner screen are checked too. Every Galaxy also has to be free of both your Samsung account and your Google account before anyone else can use it.

Turn off Find My Mobile and Google FRP lock

A Galaxy is tied to two accounts: your Samsung account through Find My Mobile (and Reactivation lock on models that have it), and your Google account through Factory Reset Protection (FRP). Leave either one on and the phone can ask the next owner for your password.

Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts.

Tap your Google account and choose Remove account. Repeat for every Google account listed.

Tap your Samsung account, choose Remove account, then Sign out, and enter your Samsung account password.

If the phone asks you to turn off Find My Mobile first, look under Settings > Security and privacy > Lost device protection, or search Settings for Find My Mobile. Menu names vary by model and One UI version.

Reset only from Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. A reset done any other way, such as from recovery mode, can trigger Google's lock.

Find the IMEI

Dial *#06#, or open Settings > About phone. Some models list it under Status or IMEI information.
Check the label on the original box.
Some Galaxy phones also have it in small print on the back near the bottom, and older models with a removable battery have it under the battery.

Check that it is valid with the free IMEI checker.

Get it ready to sell

Back up with Samsung Cloud (tap your name at the top of Settings, then Samsung Cloud) or with Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
Moving to another Galaxy? Smart Switch can copy your data straight across to the new phone.
Check that your photos are safe in Google Photos or on a computer before you reset.
If the phone was bought on Samsung Finance+, clear the loan first. Samsung's Finance+ FAQ says a phone on that plan has its apps and outgoing calls restricted if an EMI goes unpaid.
Remove your Google and Samsung accounts, then take out the SIM card and any microSD card.
Reset from Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. If a Samsung account is still signed in, you will need its password to finish.

What moves the price

The screen comes first. Older AMOLED Galaxy flagships can show burn-in, faint shapes of the keyboard or navigation bar, or a green line across the display, and either one brings the offer down.
For the battery, open Samsung Members > Support > Phone diagnostics and check Battery status. Normal is what a buyer hopes to see; Weak or Bad means a lower price.
Recent Galaxy models are promised more years of software updates than older ones (seven years for the Galaxy S24 series), and buyers take that into account.
On Galaxy Note and S Ultra models with a built-in pen slot, bring the S Pen. A missing pen lowers the offer.
On a Z Fold or Z Flip, expect a close look at the hinge, the crease and the inner screen.

Questions

My Galaxy asks for the previous Samsung account after a reset. What now?

The Samsung account was still on the phone when it was reset. Connect to Wi-Fi, sign in with that account's email and password, and then remove the account properly. If you cannot get into the account, visit a Samsung service centre with your bill.

Can I sell a Samsung bought on Samsung Finance+?

Clear the loan first. Phones bought on Samsung Finance+ run the Samsung Finance+ app, and Samsung's FAQ says the phone's apps and outgoing calls are restricted if an EMI is not paid. The same FAQ says the loan can be prepaid through that app.

Does a little screen burn-in matter?

Yes. Open a plain white or grey image at full brightness and look for faint shapes of the keyboard, status bar or navigation buttons. A buyer will do the same, so it is better to know before you are quoted.

Should I back up with Smart Switch or Samsung Cloud?

Either works. Smart Switch copies your data to a new phone or a computer, and Samsung Cloud keeps a backup online under your Samsung account. Whichever you use, check that the backup has finished before you reset.
