Selling your phone

How does selling a phone through Recashy work?

Selling your phone through a Recashy partner shop is being built. When it opens, you walk into the shop with your phone, the shop checks it in front of you and agrees a price, verifies your number with a one-time code on your own phone, records the IMEI and pays you the same day in cash or by UPI. What is live today is the free platform that mobile shops use to record the phones they buy.

What happens if I sell to a shop that already uses Recashy?

You will see the same steps at the counter. The shop sends a code to your mobile number, records the phone's IMEI and reads you a short declaration that the phone is yours to sell. The price and the payment are agreed between you and the shop.

Do I have to go to a shop?

Yes. Sales happen in person at the shop's counter, so you can watch your phone being checked and leave with your money. Recashy does not collect phones from homes, and there is no courier.

What should I bring?

Bring the phone, plus its box, bill and charger if you still have them. The shop may ask for an ID, such as Aadhaar, PAN, a driving licence, a voter ID or a passport. You also need a working phone with your own SIM in it, because the shop sends a code to your number.

How long does it take?

Once you have agreed a price, the paperwork takes the shop about two minutes. Doing your backups and signing out of your accounts at home saves the most time at the counter.

Can I sell a phone with a cracked screen or other damage?

That is up to the shop. Recashy's condition grades run from A (like new) to D (damaged), so a damaged phone can be recorded and priced for what it is. A phone still locked to your Google account or Apple Account is a bigger problem than a crack, so sign out before you go.

Can I sell a phone that belongs to someone else in my family?

The seller confirms in the declaration that the phone is their lawful property, and their mobile number is the one that gets verified. So it is best for the owner to come and sell it themselves. If that is not possible, ask the shop before you go.

Prices and payment

Who sets the price?

The shop does, after checking the phone in front of you. Recashy does not set or guarantee prices. You are free to ask questions, compare offers and walk away without selling.

What decides how much my phone is worth?

The model, the storage, how old it is, its condition grade and its battery health all count. Having the box and the bill helps. Demand matters too, and new launches tend to pull older models down.

Why is the shop's offer lower than prices I see online?

Online prices are often asking prices for phones in top condition, or quotes made before anyone has seen the phone. A shop's offer is made after checking your actual phone, and it has to leave room for the shop to resell it. Comparing offers from two or three shops is a fair way to judge one.

Can the price change after I hand over the phone?

In a counter sale, the phone is checked in front of you before you agree a price, and payment happens at the counter. There is no later inspection in a warehouse that could lower it. Do not hand the phone over until the price is agreed.

How will I be paid?

In cash, by UPI or by bank transfer, as you and the shop agree. If you are buying a new phone from the same shop, the value of your old one can be adjusted against its price. Payment is between you and the shop, and Recashy does not hold your money.

Is it safe to be paid by UPI?

Yes, if you remember one rule: you never enter your UPI PIN to receive money. If anyone asks you to approve a request or scan a code so that you can be paid, stop. Check that the money has reached your bank account before you hand over the phone.

Should I sell my phone or exchange it?

An exchange is convenient, because your old phone pays part of the new one's price in a single visit. Selling for cash leaves you free to buy the new phone wherever it is cheapest. Ask the shop for both figures, the cash price and the exchange value, and compare.

Preparing your phone

What should I do before selling my phone?

Back up your photos, contacts and chats. Sign out of your Google account or Apple Account, and of any brand account such as a Samsung account. That switches off the phone's anti-theft locks. Take out your memory card, then factory reset the phone. If this is your only phone, keep your SIM in it and do the reset at the counter, after the shop's code has arrived.

How do I back up my photos and contacts?

On Android, turn on backup in Google Photos and check that your contacts are saved to your Google account, not to the phone or the SIM. On an iPhone, turn on iCloud Photos and iCloud Backup in Settings, under your name. Before you reset, check on another device or on the web that everything is there.

How do I back up my WhatsApp chats?

Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup. On Android it backs up to your Google account, and on an iPhone to iCloud. When you set up WhatsApp on your new phone with the same number and account, it offers to restore the backup.

Why do I have to sign out of my Google account or Apple Account?

Both work as anti-theft locks. After a reset, an Android phone can ask for the last Google account used on it, and an iPhone with Find My on asks for the owner's Apple Account password. If you do not sign out first, the next owner cannot set the phone up, and the shop cannot resell it.

What if I have forgotten my Google or Apple password?

Recover it before you sell. Google and Apple both have account recovery steps that use your phone number or recovery email. A phone that is still locked to your account is very hard to sell, because nobody else can use it.

What about my SIM, memory card and eSIM?

Take out your memory card at home, after checking that nothing is stored only there. Keep your SIM in a working phone until the shop's code has arrived. If your number is on an eSIM, move it to your new phone or delete it from the old one before the reset. Your number stays yours, and your operator can issue a new eSIM if you need one.

Should I bring the box and the bill?

Yes, if you have them. The box label shows the IMEI, so a matching box helps show the phone is genuine and yours, and the bill shows where it was bought. Neither is required, but both can help the price.

Safety and privacy

Why does the shop send a code to my phone?

The code proves that the mobile number on the record of the sale is really yours. That ties the sale to you, which protects you as much as the shop if the phone's history is ever questioned. Read the code out only to the shop you are selling to, at the counter, and never to someone who calls or messages you for it.

Will the shop keep my Aadhaar number?

Not on Recashy. If you show an ID, only its last 4 digits are kept, with a one-way fingerprint that cannot be turned back into the number. The full number is never stored. You can also show a masked Aadhaar, which hides the first 8 digits.

Why might the shop take photos?

Photos of the phone, of you holding it and of your ID make the record of the sale stronger. On Recashy they are optional, and they stay with the shop's record. Every time someone opens an ID photo, it is logged.

What is the declaration I am asked to confirm?

Before the sale is recorded, the shop reads you a short statement: that the phone is your lawful property, that it is not stolen or subject to any lien or hire-purchase agreement, and that the ID you showed is genuine and your own. It is stored with the record word for word. Only confirm it if all of it is true.

Who can see my details after I sell?

The shop that bought your phone. Recashy stores the record on the shop's behalf, and other shops cannot see your name, number or ID. If the phone is later sold on to another dealer, its IMEI and handset details go with it, but your personal details stay with the first shop.

How can I check that a used phone is not stolen before I buy it?

Send KYM <15-digit IMEI> by SMS to 14422, or use Sanchar Saathi, the Department of Telecommunications portal and app. If the result shows the phone as blacklisted, duplicate or already in use, do not buy it. Also check that the IMEI from *#06# matches the box and the bill, and that the seller has signed out of their Google account or Apple Account.

My phone was lost or stolen. What should I do?

If you can, use Find Hub on Android or Find My on an iPhone to locate, lock or erase it. Report it to the police and keep the complaint number. Then block it through the Sanchar Saathi portal, which uses the CEIR system to stop the phone working on Indian mobile networks. You will need the IMEI, the complaint details, an ID and your number active on a new SIM to receive a code.
