Sell by brand

Sell your old Apple phone.

A used iPhone is only worth something if the next person can sign in and use it. Before quoting, a buyer checks that Activation Lock is off, looks at battery health, and opens Parts and Service History to see whether any part was replaced. You can check all three yourself at home before you go.

01

Turn off Find My and Activation Lock

While Find My is on, the iPhone stays locked to your Apple Account (called Apple ID on older iOS versions), even after it is erased. Nobody else can set it up until you sign out, so it is of no use to a buyer.

  1. 01

Back up first. Then open Settings and tap your name at the top.

  2. 02

Scroll down, tap Sign Out and enter your Apple Account password. This turns off Find My and Activation Lock. Recent iOS versions also offer to erase the iPhone at this point.

  3. 03

If Stolen Device Protection is on, do this at home. Away from familiar places, signing out needs Face ID or Touch ID and a one-hour wait.

  4. 04

Erase the iPhone: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.

  5. 05

If the iPhone has already left your hands, sign in at icloud.com/find, select it and choose Remove This Device.

02

Find the IMEI

  • Dial *#06# on the keypad, or open Settings > General > About and scroll to IMEI.
  • Check the barcode label on the original box. It lists the IMEI next to the serial number.
  • On iPhone 6s to iPhone 13 and iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), it is on the SIM tray. iPhone 14 and later models have no IMEI engraving.
  • On iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6 Plus and iPhone SE (1st generation), it is engraved on the back.

Check that it is valid with the free IMEI checker.

03

Get it ready to sell

  • Back up to iCloud with Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now, or to a computer using Finder on a Mac or the Apple Devices app on Windows.
  • Moving to a new iPhone? Use Quick Start to copy everything across before you erase the old one.
  • Moving to Android? Back up WhatsApp separately and turn off iMessage first, so texts from iPhone users still reach your number.
  • Unpair your Apple Watch if one is paired with this iPhone.
  • Sign out of your Apple Account, then erase the iPhone. Keep to that order.
  • Take out the SIM card. If you use an eSIM, move your number to the new phone or speak to your operator first, then choose to erase the eSIM along with the iPhone when asked.
  • Once it is erased, remove the old iPhone from the device list in your Apple Account.

What moves the price

  • Battery health counts for a lot. Note the Maximum Capacity under Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging, or Settings > Battery > Battery Health on iPhone 15 and later.
  • If the iPhone was ever repaired, Settings > General > About shows Parts and Service History. Apple itself says an Unknown Part message might affect trade-in value.
  • Storage is part of the price. The same model with more storage is worth more, so check yours in Settings > General > About.
  • Face ID or Touch ID, the cameras and the speakers will all be tested. Try them yourself first so the quote holds no surprises.
  • The original box with a matching IMEI label and the bill both help, and so does any Apple warranty or AppleCare+ still running.

More in what decides a phone’s resale price.

Questions

Can I sell an iPhone that is still on EMI?

Selling it does not end the EMI. A card EMI is a loan between you and your bank, not a lock on the phone, so you keep paying the instalments after the sale. If a finance company paid for the phone, read your loan terms before you sell.

I forgot my Apple Account password. Can I still sell my iPhone?

Not until you are back in the account, because only you can turn off Activation Lock. Reset the password through Apple's account recovery, or from another Apple device signed in to the same account. If that fails and you have the original bill, you can start an Activation Lock support request with Apple.

What does Unknown Part mean on my iPhone?

It shows in Parts and Service History when a replaced battery, display or camera is not a genuine Apple part, or was not verified after the repair. The phone usually still works, but Apple says it might affect trade-in value. Tell the shop about any repair up front.

Do I need to remove my eSIM before selling?

Yes. When you erase the iPhone, choose to erase the eSIM too. If you want the same number on your new phone, transfer the eSIM or get a new one from your operator before you erase.

Is Recashy connected to Apple?

No. Recashy is independent and is not affiliated with Apple. The Apple and iPhone names are used here only to describe the phones this page covers.

What is your Apple worth?

A fair range for your model, age and condition, before anyone quotes you.
