Sell your old Redmi phone.

Redmi is Xiaomi's sub-brand, covering the Redmi A models, the numbered Redmi phones and the Redmi Note line. A buyer checks the screen, charging port, cameras and fingerprint sensor, and above all makes sure the phone is no longer tied to a Xiaomi account. A Redmi that asks for a Mi account after a reset cannot be set up by anyone else.

Turn off Mi account lock and Google FRP lock

With Find device on, a Redmi stays tied to your Xiaomi (Mi) account, and after a reset it shows a locked screen asking for that account. Your Google account adds Factory Reset Protection (FRP) on top, so both have to come off.

Open Settings > Xiaomi Account (Mi Account on older phones) and tap Sign out. If Find device is on, you will need your account password.

Remove your Google account as well. It is usually under Settings > Accounts & sync; menu names vary with the MIUI or HyperOS version.

Check that no accounts are left, then reset from Settings > About phone > Factory reset > Erase all data.

If the phone is already reset or no longer with you, sign in at i.mi.com, open Find device and turn it off for that phone.

Find the IMEI

Dial *#06# in the Phone app.
On HyperOS, open Settings > About phone > Detailed info and specs > Status. On older MIUI phones, look under Settings > About phone.
Check the label on the original box.

Check that it is valid with the free IMEI checker.

Get it ready to sell

Back up from Settings > About phone > Back up and restore, to Xiaomi Cloud or a computer. A backup kept only on the phone is wiped by the reset.
Make sure your photos are in Google Photos, Xiaomi Cloud or on a computer.
Moving to another Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO phone? Mi Mover copies your data across directly over Wi-Fi.
If the phone was bought on EMI through a finance company, clear the loan or check with the lender first.
Sign out of your Xiaomi account and remove your Google account.
Take out the SIM cards and any microSD card, then reset from Settings > About phone > Factory reset.

What moves the price

Redmi models come in several RAM and storage versions, and the price follows the version printed on the box. Extended RAM, which borrows from storage, does not count.
A buyer looks at the screen on a white background for marks, patches or lines, and tests the charging port, speakers and fingerprint sensor.
A model that still gets HyperOS updates is more attractive to a buyer than one that no longer does.
The box with a matching IMEI label and the bill both help, especially while the phone is still under warranty.
A Redmi that shows a locked screen after a reset has almost no value until the account owner unlocks it.

Questions

My Redmi asks for a Mi account after reset. What do I do?

That screen means Find device was still on when the phone was reset. Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in with the same Xiaomi account to unlock it. If you forgot the password, reset it from the Xiaomi account sign-in page. If the account belongs to someone else, only they can release the phone, from i.mi.com.

Is a Mi account the same as a Xiaomi account?

Yes. Older phones call it Mi Account and newer ones call it Xiaomi Account, but it is the same login and the same lock. Sign out of it, whatever your phone calls it.

Can I sell a Redmi bought on EMI?

Selling does not close the loan; you keep paying it. Some lenders put a lock app on phones sold on EMI that can restrict the phone if payments stop, so clear the loan or check with your lender before you sell.

Do I need to remove the Google account too?

Yes. The Xiaomi account and the Google account are two separate locks. Remove both before the reset, or the phone can ask for one of them when it starts again.
