Before you hand it over.

Nine steps, in the order that matters. The 2-factor and sign-out steps are the ones people regret skipping. Do not skip them.

1. Back everything upPhotos, videos, chats. Google Photos or iCloud for media; WhatsApp has its own backup under Settings → Chats → Chat backup.
2. Move WhatsApp properlyBack up chats first, then register WhatsApp on your new phone. Doing it in this order keeps your chat history.
3. Move your 2-factor appsAuthenticator apps (Google Authenticator, Authy) do NOT move with a backup. Transfer accounts from inside the app before you reset, or you lose access to everything they guard.
4. Deregister UPI and banking appsOpen each banking/UPI app and remove this device, or the bank may keep treating it as trusted.
5. Sign out of Google / Apple IDThe single most important step. A phone still locked to your account is worthless to the buyer and a risk to you. Android: Settings → Accounts. iPhone: Settings → your name → Sign out (this turns off Activation Lock).
6. Take out SIM and memory cardCheck the tray twice. Shops find forgotten SIMs every week.
7. Note the IMEI and keep the billDial *#06# and photograph the screen. With the original bill, you get a better price and the record is cleaner.
8. Factory resetAndroid: Settings → System → Reset. iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content. Only after the sign-out step above.
9. Clean it, find the boxA wiped screen and the original box reliably add to the quote. Two minutes well spent.
