Sell your old phone or exchange it?
Exchange offers versus selling your old phone for cash or UPI: how exchange values work, how to compare the real cost, and when each choice makes sense.
In short
- An exchange value only works as a discount on a new phone from that seller, while a sale gives you money to spend anywhere.
- Compare what the new phone finally costs you each way, not the headline exchange figure.
- Some shops can do both in one visit, buying your old phone and setting its price against the new one.
01Two ways to use your old phone
When you buy a new phone, you can trade the old one in through an exchange offer, or sell it and use the money however you like. Both are fair choices, and they suit different situations.
Exchange offers are run by brand stores, large retail chains and shopping sites. You give your old phone and get a discount on a new one. Selling means a shop pays you for the old phone in cash, by UPI or by bank transfer, whether or not you buy anything.
02How exchange offers work
- The exchange value is tied to buying a particular new phone, usually from the same seller. You cannot take it as cash.
- Many offers add an exchange bonus on top of the old phone's value, but only on certain new models.
- Headline figures usually say 'up to'. The top amount is for a recent model in perfect condition.
- With online exchanges, the old phone is usually checked when the new one is delivered. If it does not match what you declared, the exchange value can be cut or the exchange refused.
- Check whether the exchange can be combined with other offers, such as bank card discounts.
03Compare the total cost
The fair comparison is what the new phone really costs you each way.
- 01
Best price without exchange
Find the lowest price for the new phone you want, with any card or festive offers you qualify for.
- 02
Your old phone's selling price
Get a price from a shop after it has inspected the phone. Recashy's phone value estimator gives you a range to start from.
- 03
The exchange price
Note the new phone's price with the exchange applied. That is what you would pay.
- 04
Compare
Take the selling price from step 2 away from the price in step 1. If the result is lower than step 3, selling wins. If it is higher, the exchange wins.
| Exchange at store A | Buy at store B, sell the old phone | |
|---|---|---|
| New phone price | ₹30,000 | ₹28,500 with a card offer |
| Old phone | ₹8,000 exchange value | ₹7,000 from a shop |
| What the new phone really costs you | ₹22,000 | ₹21,500 |
In this made-up case, selling wins by ₹500, even though the exchange value looked higher. Change one number and the answer can flip, so do the sum with your own figures.
04Exchange or sell, side by side
| Exchange offer | Sell to a shop | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A discount on one new phone | Cash, UPI or bank transfer |
| Tied to a purchase | Yes, often a specific model | No |
| When the price is final | Online, often only at delivery | At the counter, after inspection |
| Proof of the deal | Your order invoice | A written record of the sale |
| Days without a phone | None, if done in one go | Possible, unless you buy the new phone first |
| Best when | You already want that exact phone | You want to choose freely or wait for a better deal |
05Plan the handover
With an online exchange, the old phone usually leaves with the delivery person when the new one arrives. There may be no time to copy data from phone to phone, so back everything up to the cloud before delivery day, then sign out and reset the old phone.
If you sell to a shop first, you could be without a phone for a while. Buy the new phone first and move your data across, or keep a spare handset for your SIM.
Used phone prices tend to dip after new launches and during big festive sales, so selling a little before them often gets you more.
06Doing both in one visit
Some mobile shops sell new phones and buy old ones, so you can do both at the same counter. You get the convenience of an exchange, and the old phone is still priced on its own after an inspection.
At Recashy partner shops, the purchase of your old phone can be recorded as adjusted against a new phone. The record still shows the IMEI, the agreed price and your verified number, and it is locked once filed, with a number like RC-000123.
